Die Berliner Ibn-Rushd-Goethe-Moschee steht für einen progressiven, liberalen, inklusiven Islam. Männer und Frauen beten in der Moschee gemeinsam, Frauen dürfen Predigten halten, das Gebet leiten oder als Imam:in tätig sein. Und sie ist ein Safe Space für die LGBTQIA+ Community, die dortige Anlaufstelle „Islam und Diversity“ bietet queeren Muslim:innen Unterstützung und Beratung an.
Das Team der Moschee setzt sich für Toleranz sowie einen interreligiösen Dialog ein und beteiligt sich so auch z. B. an Aktionen gegen Antisemtismus. Seyran Ateş, Anwältin, Frauenrechtlerin und Aktivistin, gründete und eröffnete die Moschee 2017. Sie lebt seit vielen Jahren unter Polizeischutz.
Die Moschee und ihre Mitarbeiter:innen sind immer wieder Ziel von Anfeindungen, Hetze, Morddrohungen und Anschlagsplänen. Nach Terrordrohungen wurde die Moschee 2023/2024 für einige Zeit ganz geschlossen.
2025 erschien im Querverlag das Buch „Liebe ist halal“, herausgegeben von Carolin Leder, Tugay Saraş und der Ibn-Rush-Goethe-Moschee. Zahlreiche Lesungen und Diskussionsveranstaltungen begleiteten die Veröffentlichung.
Die Fotoreportage hat die Moschee und ihre Mitarbeiter:innen einige Monate bei ihrer Arbeit in der Moschee, bei Lesungen und einem multireligiösen Gottesdienst „Liebe braucht Mut“ anlässlich von CSD & Pride Month in der St. Marienkirche begleitet, den christliche, jüdische und muslimische Gläubige gemeinsam begehen.

The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin stands for a progressive, liberal, inclusive Islam. Men and women pray together in the mosque, are allowed to give sermons, lead prayers, or serve as imams. And it is a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community; the local contact point “Islam and Diversity” offers support and counseling to queer Muslims.
Seyran Ateş, a lawyer, women’s rights activist, founded and opened the mosque in 2017. She has been living under police protection for many years. The mosque and its employees are repeatedly the target of hostility, hate speech, death threats, and plans for attacks. Following terrorist threats, the mosque was closed completely for some time in 2023/2024.
In 2025, Querverlag published the book “Liebe ist halal” (Love is Halal), edited by Carolin Leder, Tugay Saraş and the Ibn Rush Goethe Mosque. Numerous readings and discussion events accompanied the publication.
The photo reportage accompanied the mosque and its employees for several months as they worked in the mosque, at readings, and at a multi-religious service “Liebe braucht Mut” (Love needs courage) on the occasion of CSD & Pride Month in St. Mary’s Church. This service is celebrated by Christian, Jewish and Muslim believers.
